My thoughts on SAMR

Currently, I am not teaching. But this method of SAMR seems to be really relevant and substantial within the classroom. As I have many friends who are active teachers, I will be sure to pass this information along to them as well. I will also be sure to utilize this for future reference also for myself.

I feel the SAMR resource is greatly useful for interactive within the secondary classroom level. I feel that the Substitution tool would be significantly useful for breaking down any barriers in language. More specifically as it relates to speech and grammar. Teachers could substitute worksheets and allow students to interactively utilize computer technology to aide and guide them in their language. This goes hand-hand as it relates to the emergence of Augmentation.

With the use of Modification perhaps teachers could work more succinctly with the students to help better fit their needs. For example, setting up an online forum in which students could address any questions that they may have, and instructors will be able to respond accordingly. Further, to make it even more high-tech allowing students to post math problems. For instance, if there is a math problem in which they might have struggled upon during the class session; students will now have both their peers and the instructor present during the forum to respond to any inquiries or questions they might have.

Lastly, I loved what Barbara stated about the use of web 2.0 video for a student yearbook. Again, I've worked closely with current teachers and this is the new method that teachers are utilizing to comprise students yearly accomplishments and accolades. It’s definitely more of a sufficient and easier way of creating content that will always be easy to access. With this method, parents will be able to make copies of their child(s) work and even have the option of placing that information of a DVD.

Augmentation
Computer Technology offers an effective tool to perform common tasks.
Taking the above step a bit further to aide their understanding.
Modification
This is the first step over the line between enhancing the traditional goings-on of the classroom and transforming the classroom. Common classroom tasks are being accomplished through the use of computer technology.

  1. I really like the idea about the student yearbook. Too often, in the inner-city schools at least, yearbooks are becomming a thing of the past. I could see this idea going a little further to include a virtual component. Whether it is putting the yearbook on a disk or flash drive or posting it to the schools secured website. My point is that with the rate funding is being decreased some schools have to cut out the yearbook because of time, publishing, binding, etc. What if the students did ALL of the work and digitally published it. The cost problem is gone. Just an idea.

  2. Hi Damon, We are doing exactly what you are saying with Substitution in my classrooms, where worksheets are not being used nearly as much for vocabulary and English language conventions, and the kids are enjoying this change. In reference to Modification, I like what you said about having a forum to post and get a response from both the teacher and peers, and also, this could be a way for teachers to offer more customized student support, as well.

  3. Per Regina's comment, what is it about the computer 'worksheet' that makes such a difference, as several of you have explained it as an "S"? Does it improve scores, or are they just better behaved (again, just providing fodder for the discussion)?

  4. Hi Mr. Wettstein,

Yes I totally agree with you when you say "yearbooks are becoming a thing of the past." The fact of the matter is nearly everything has in some way gone virtual these days. It is as if something is not online, its sort of not happening. lol So, to incorporate these memories of students while they are in secondary education onto the web is truly useful. Saves time, money and is all around more efficient.

  5. Hello Regina,

It's really great that your students are already gaining practice and usage from the online learning programs. I think it truly aides students retention span. The reason being is the fact that they are many times accustomed to using online networks. Everyday, their engaging in social media be it: Facebook, or Twitter. So why not have the same behaviors of online interaction in the classroom?! I think it is a great success.

  6. Hello Professor,

Thank you for your add there. You compile a good question there. Regina, have you saw an overall improvement in the grading scales from using online resources than actual worksheets? Further, do you feel that teachers at your school might do away with the old standard of worksheets altogether?

I like the idea of using webpages to enhance speech and grammar. I can see how it would be very useful for written communication and grammar, however am not sure how webpages could be used to enhance verbal speech. Would you be able to give me an example?

I also like the idea of using new technology to bring back yearbooks. Most people love having yearbooks as a way to remember there high school days, I think its great to use technology so that yearbooks are still used, but in a current way.

  8. Hello Everyone,

I do see that we are going to start the switch over from paper to web based information. I think the reasoning behind this is because the programs have finally gotten up to speed with the computers. I can remember when we first got computers at work. The selling point was no more paper copies. Well, after 25 years I think we might be getting to that point, finally.

  9. Damon, I am interested in some more specifics reagrding the substitution and augmentation portions. How would you use web pages to enhance student grammar? Perhaps you already addressed it and I didn't understand. However, I thing using the Web 2.0 tools for a yearbook is a great idea. I had a similar idea on my blog. It seems it would be much more cost effective and visually appealing to do it this way.

    1. Hi Tracie and Matt,

In regards to using webpages to enhance speech and grammar, teachers could set up user-friendly interactive gaming methods where students could verbally hear (using headphones of some sort) the specific sounding off of various words, phrases and parts of speech. These types of method(s) would be greatly helpful because it would better engage students and allow them to fully grasp the idea of using language properly. Certain instances of this have already been designed, using what some commonly distinguish as Leapfrog. http://www.leapfrog.com/en/index.html . While searching for websites of this nature, I did find something relative in nature here: http://www.grammar-monster.com/tests/test_punctuation.htmmore

I hope this gives you both a better understanding. 
